WHY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU?

People need to be active to be healthy. Our modern lifestyle and all the conveniences we've
become used to have made us sedentary - and that's dangerous for our health. Sitting
around in front of the TV or the computer, riding in the car for even a short trip to the store
and using elevators instead of stairs or ramps all contribute to our inactivity. Physical
inactivity is as dangerous to our health as smoking!
Add up your activities during the day in periods of at least 10 minutes each. Start slowly
... and build up. If you're already doing some light activities move up to more moderate
ones. A little is good, but more is better if you want to achieve health benefits.
Scientists say accumulate 60 minutes of physical activity every day to stay healthy or
improve your health. Time needed depends on effort - as you progress to moderate
activities, you can cut down to thirty minutes, four days a week.
Physical activity doesn't have to be very hard to improve your health. This goal can be
reached by building physical activities into your daily routine. Just add up in periods of at
least ten minutes each throughout the day. After three months of regular physical activity,
you will notice a difference - people often say getting started is the hardest part.

STOP SMOKING OR WE MAY NOT OPERATE ON YOU

Patients will have to try to give up the habit if they want to get treatment, such as knee replacement. Posters with “Those
who don’t, may not be treated” are all over hospitals. The Health Service in Britain is millions of pounds in debt and this
strategy will help save money on care. Hospital managers say smokers are at greater risk of complications when having
operations, they take more time to recover, and they have longer and more expensive stays in hospital.
Critics accuse them of putting finances before the health of patients, but the hospitals are giving 5 an opportunity to
smokers, proposing that if they need surgery they must undergo therapy for three months in order to get out of the habit. If
they have made a strong effort to stop smoking but have failed, they may still get surgery, but if it is believed that they have
not tried hard enough, then they may not be operated on.
The National Health Service is following guidelines from the Government, which allows them to consider patients’
10 lifestyles when deciding if a treatment would be effective. Smokers, however, say that they are being discriminated against.
The pro-smoking pressure group Forest says: “Smokers pay their taxes like everyone else, they have the right to free
healthcare.” Last year, health authorities in Suffolk stopped obese people from having operations until they tried to lose
weight.

“MAXIMISING” CHILDREN

Are you enrolling your small children in a violin course? Do you somehow add ballet, drama, and judo to football and
English lessons? The great news is that this will all make your children do better in school! Well, it might or it might not. It
may turn them into exhausted, disciplined automatons or it may block their imaginations, and leave them no time to
themselves.
If only middle-class parents would stop trying to maximise their children! Children don’t have 5 to be accomplished
violinists or athletics champions or black-belt karate kids. Why can’t they just have fun?
Certain enjoyable activities are very difficult to pick up as an adult, and these are worth learning when young.
Playing an instrument is one; skiing (if you can afford it) is another. But it is pointless to push children where they don’t
want to go. And you wonder: do all these children really want to be stars, or is it their parents’ ambition for them?
10 A child’s chances of success in life are determined mainly by its innate ability. There is not much you can do about
that. Mozarts are born, not made. A certain amount of application helps, particularly in secondary school. Beyond that, a
happy, loving and accepting family providing emotional stability is about all children really need.

The harry potter phenomenon (Selectividad test)

UNIVERSIDAD DE ANDALUCÍA

THE HARRY POTTER PHENOMENON

The five Harry Potter books have sold 250 million copies worldwide. Author J.K. Rowling’s agent, Christopher Little, confirmed the extraordinary sales figures on Monday –and revealed that, consequently, Rowling had begun work on the sixth Potter adventure. Mr Little said the series had “entered the history books again with its record-breaking sales.”

The books have been sold in more than 200 countries and translated into 60 languages from Hindi to Ancient Greek. The fifth book, The Order of the Phoenix, sold 1.78 million copies on its first day in the UK alone. Teachers and publishers believe that the Potter books have been helpful in encouraging more children to read. That success is even more welcome in an age dominated by TV, cartoons and computer games. “J.K. Rowling’s books have hown the way for a new generation of writers of exciting children’s books, causing a revolution in children’s enthusiasm for reading,” Mr Little said.

Rowling, once a single mother who wrote her books in an Edinburgh café, is now a multi-millionaire ranked as the world’s best paid author. The stories started as a way of making her daughter sleep, and now Rowling earns some £125 million a year –the equivalent of £388 for every word of her most recent book.
