3rd TYPE CONDITIONALS Explanation and practice

The 3rd conditional sentence structure is also called the past unreal conditional or past hypothetical conditional. It is used to imagine a different past than the one that happened.

If I hadn’t eaten so much, I wouldn’t have got so fat. (Si yo no hubiera comi tanto, no habría engordado tanto)

The if clause is unreal. It did not happen. The result is what would have happened IF the if clause were real:
If I hadn’t eaten so much,
Did I eat a lot? Yes, I did. However, I’m imagining what would have happened if I hadn’t eaten so much.

What would have happened if I hadn’t eaten so much? The result:
…I wouldn’t have gotten* so fat.
Am I fat now? Yes. I would not be fat now if hadn’t eaten so much in the past. If I ate well in the past, I would not be fat now.
*In American English, ‘gotten’ is used at the past participle of ‘got.’ In British English, ‘gotten’ is not used.
[I'm not fat in real life! I am just using this as an example sentence!]

The 3rd conditional form:

If + past perfect, would have + past participle

NOTE:

*Because you are imagining the past, you can ONLY use if. In this sentence structure, you cannot use when, after, or any other time conjunction.

Common uses of this sentence structure:

((Usos comunes de la tercera condicional: ))

1.What would you have done if … ? (¿Qué habrías hecho si...?)
What would you have done if you hadn’t been accepted at any university?
What would you have done if we hadn’t been there to help?
What would you have done differently if you had known you would never speak to him again?

2. If I had known… (Si yo hubiera sabido que...)
If I had known that you needed help, I would have come!
If we had known you were sick, we would have gone to visit you in the hospital.
We wouldn’t have driven all this way if we had known the museum was closed.
If I had known that you needed a ride to school, I would have driven you.
I really wanted to see that movie! If I had known you were going, I would have gone with you!

3. You can use this sentence structure to express regret about something in the past, and to wish the past had happened differently.
If we had known the movie was so awful, we wouldn’t have wasted our money on it.
If I had finished high school and gone to university, I would have gotten a better job.

4. You can use this structure to criticize someone/something or point out mistakes:
(Para criticar algo o señalar errores)
If you hadn’t stayed out so late last night, you wouldn’t have slept in and been late for work!
It would have been quicker if we had taken a taxi to the park instead of walking.

More example sentences:
If I hadn’t gone to the party, I would have never met my husband.
We would have gone out last night if we hadn’t been so tired.
If his brother hadn’t reminded him, Dan would have forgotten his wife’s birthday.
If she had seen the ice on the road, she would have slowed down and she wouldn’t have gotten in an accident.

Other modal verbs can be used in the result clause:

might have + past participle = maybe
If I had known you would be at the party, I might have gone.
If I had known about his police record, I might not have dated him.
If he had finished high school, he might have had a better life.
If she had been wearing her seatbelt, she might have survived the car accident.

could have + past participle = possibility or ability
I could have been a world-class swimmer if I had practiced more when I was younger.
If I had known you didn’t have a car, I could have driven you to the meeting.
If my parents hadn’t lent me money, I could never have afforded university.
If you had told me the TV was broken, I could have fixed it for you!
ONLINE ACTIVITIES to PRACTICE: (practica en tu ordenador la 3ª condicional)

1. In this exercise, you will practise forming the third conditional. Based on the example sentence, complete the third conditional sentence by filling in the spaces.

THIRD CONDITIONALS PRACTICE

ACTIVITY ONE:

We are going to read the following dialogue which includes sentences in 3rd conditional type. We will identify their structure and we can translate it into our own language.

Susan: Has it ever occurred to you that if you hadn’t been giving a class in Pepsi on the day I was visiting the marketing department, we never would have become friends?
Jack: Of course it’s occurred to me… and if we hadn’t become friends then we wouldn’t have fallen in love.
Susan: And if we hadn’t fallen in love you wouldn’t have escaped your empty life.
Jack: Hey… hold on a minute… I don’t remember that part.
Susan: That’s what you wrote on my Facebook page when we 10 started going out.
Jack: Yeah…I was probably just trying to get you in bed.
Susan: But you’d already got me in bed.
Jack: In that case I must have been trying to keep you in bed. But, anyway…yeah…none of us’ll forget that in a hurry. It was through Facebook that my ex found out I was in a new relationship. She went nuts. If I hadn’t written that message she never would have found out and she never would have gone to your office.

ACTIVITY TWO:

The students will memorize the dialogue in pairs and they'll perform it in front of the class. This is an excellent practice to eliminate the shiness in the students.

7. If Euskatel had bought Vodafone we would have been in another reality.
8. If they had advised them, they would have attended.
9. If Camaron had been born in London he would have been a punk.
10. If Camaron had been punk, he would have sung ‘soy punk’ instead of ‘soy gitano’.

REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS IN ENGLISH

1. REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS IN ENGLISH / Los pronombres reflexivos en inglés

myself – yo mismo, me, a mí mismo,
yourself – a ti mismo, te, tú mismo, a usted mismo
yourselves- os, a vosotros mismos, a ustedes mismos

Be careful the plural is irregular: SELF--> SELVES.

2.  DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ENGLISH AND SPANISH / Diferencias entre español y inglés:

Reflexive pronouns aren't as common in English as they're in Spanish language, here you are some examples / Ten en cuanta que los pronombres reflexivos no son tan comunes en inglés como en español.

“Me he afeitado” “I have shaved”

there are some idetical meanings in both langages for example: /Sin embargo existen algunos verbos ingleses en que los pronombres reflexivos son exactamente igual que en español: por ejemplo – ‘to enjoy oneself’

The girls enjoyed themselves a lot – las chicas se divertieron mucho
I enjoyed myself a lot – me divertí mucho

3.  When do we use these pronouns in English language?

“I’ll do it myself.”

If you’re too tight to buy it I’ll buy it myself.” “Si eres demasiado tacaño para comprarlo lo comprare yo misma.”

O imagínate unos padres muy dominantes que siempre están diciendo a su hijo lo que tiene que hacer – incluso intentan dictar lo que tiene que estudiar en la universidad. Un día el chico dice ‘ya basta… voy a decidir mi futuro yo mismo… no vosotros.” “I’m going to decide my future myself… not you.”

2.  We use them when we do something and we receive the effects of that action / Se usan los pronombres reflexivos en inglés cuando hacemos algo y recibimos los efectos de esta acción.

I’m going to promote myself on my website.” “He said he wanted to paint himself pink.” “Dijo que queria pintarse de rosa.” (Perdón – no sé de qué parte de mi subconsciente proviene esta imagen).

4. Some Common sentences with Reflexive Pronouns /  frases comunes:

1. To help yourself to something…. “servirse”… “Help yourself to desert if you want”. Sírvase el postre si quieres.”
2. Cuando estas solo estas “by yourself.” Si ella esta sola esta “by herself.”
3 “Go fuck yourself”.
“To believe in yourself.”

5. Activity to practice these pronouns / Ejercicio con los pronombres reflexivos en inglés :

* Translate into English with a reflexive pronoun : Hay que leer esta lista de oraciones con los pronombres reflexivos en inglés. Después hay que traducirlas. Venga…es un ejercicio muy fácil.

First Conditional

The basic structure of this conditional is this:

IF + present simple, + future simple (estructura básica)

If you leave me nown You'll take away the biggest part of me (Bee Gees' Video).
You can see the use of the first conditional in this song.

The first conditional (also called conditional type 1) is a structure used for talking about possibilities in the present or in the future. This page will explain how the first conditional is formed, and when to use it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The structure of a first conditional sentence
A first conditional sentence consists of two clauses, an "if" clause and a main clause:

if clause main clause
If you study hard, you will pass the test.

If the "if" clause comes first, a comma is usually used. If the "if" clause comes second, there is no need for a comma:

main clause if clause
You will pass the test if you study hard.

We use different verb forms in each part of a first conditional:

if clause if + subject + simple present verb
main clause subject + will + verb

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Using the first conditional
The first conditional is used to talk about things which are possible in the present or the future -- things which may happen:

Example Explanation

If it's sunny, we'll go to the park. Maybe it will be sunny -- that's possible.
Paula will be sad if Juan leaves. Maybe Juan will leave -- that's possible.
If you cook the supper, I'll wash the dishes. Maybe you will cook the supper -- that's possible
